In the previous blog, we discussed the important elements of a hook. Now, we will dive deeper into hook holds. Where do you want a carp to be hooked, and what does the hook placement tell you about the rig used?
The hook hold is perhaps the most crucial moment in catching a carp. If the hook hold is not successful, the chances of losing the fish are high. However, if the hook is in the right place, the fish won’t come off, and you can take your time to calmly reel it in.

But where exactly should you hook the fish? What provides the most grip and the least chance of losing the fish? Generally speaking, you want to hook the carp in the middle of the mouth and slightly toward the back. Just behind the harder part of the mouth is where the hook will find the best hold.
When fishing with a bottom bait and hooking the carp neatly in the center of the mouth, it indicates that your rig length is just right.
If you hook the fish more on the side of the mouth, it suggests that the rig might be a bit too long. The fish has had too much room to move around with the bait in its mouth. In that case, it’s best to shorten the rig a little.
On the other hand, if the fish is barely hooked on the lip, it’s likely that your rig is too short. Lengthen it slightly to ensure there is enough space for the hook to set further back and set properly.
Tip: In some cases the fish’s mouths are so hard in the center that you may want to hook them more on the side, as this area is softer, providing a better hold for the hook. Check your hookhold every time! Write it down in your phone and draw the right conclusions!;)
